Programming Windows NT and Windows 95 with Visual C++ & MFC

Learn how to build robust, fully-featured Win32 applications using the Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC) library.

Instructor: Jeff Prosise, author of Microsoft Press's best-selling Programming Windows 95 with MFC and columnist for Microsoft
Systems Journal and PC Magazine
Duration: 2 days with lectures only; 4 days with optional hands-on labs

SEMINAR DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES

Face it: Windows programming isn't getting any easier. The growing complexity of the Windows API cries out for an object-oriented programming language and a robust class library to go with it. In two intensive days (four days with optional labs), this seminar teaches programmers how to write fully-featured 32-bit applications for Windows NT and Windows 95 using Visual C++ and Microsoft's MFC class library.

Programming Windows NT & Windows 95 with Visual C++ & MFC isn't a course about clicking buttons in AppWizard. Sure, you'll learn how to use Visual C++ and the visual programming tools that it places at your disposal. But more importantly, you'll get a solid foundation in Windows programming theory and become thoroughly acquainted with MFC and the MFC application framework. Key topics that are covered in the course include:

Lectures consist of a mix of talks and live code demonstrations. Even if you've never programmed Windows before, you'll come away from this seminar with the know-how to write Win32 applications that take advantage of the best features MFC has to offer. You'll also understand where the gaps are in MFC and when to drop down to the Win32 API to work around them.

OPTIONAL LABS

Programming Windows NT & Windows 95 with Visual C++ & MFC comes in two flavors: a 2-day lecture-only version and a 4-day version with hands-on labs. Labs are interspersed throughout the day (two hours the morning and two hours in the afternoon), and provide attendees the opportunity to apply what they've learned under the close supervision of the course instructor. Although optional, the labs are highly recommended.

PREREQUISITES

Attendees should be familiar with the C++ programming language and also with fundamental object-oriented programming concepts such as encapsulation and inheritance. You don't have to be a C++ guru to benefit from this class, but you should at least know how to derive a class and understand what a virtual function is. No prior experience programming Windows is required.
