                        PhotoFina L.E. Version 1.03
                       =============================

Thank you for purchasing PhotoFina L.E.. This readme file contains
informations that have not been fully documented elsewhere.
Close Notepad to return to Program Manager if you don't want
to read this file.

1. A 256-color Super VGA display card is recommended. Nevertheless, it is
alright if you are using a 16-color VGA card. PhotoFina L.E. can compensate
for that and displays images as well as possible.

2. You can run PhotoFina L.E. under both Windows 3.0 and 3.1. But please note
that if you are under Windows 3.0, you can only run PhotoFina L.E. in the
Standard or Enhanced mode, NOT in the Real mode.

3. The PhotoFina L.E. diskette contains two scanner drivers: VIEWSPI.SYS and
WALKSPI.SYS. VIEWSPI.SYS is for Artec ViewScan Scanner, while WALKSPI.SYS
   is for Artec WalkScan scanner.

4. PhotoFina L.E. does not support 24-bit true color images (they will be
supported in the next version as soon as possible). However, these
images can be read (opened), and then PhotoFina L.E. will ask the user
if you want to convert the image into an indexed 256-color one so that
PhotoFina L.E. can work on it.

5. The Scan Window of Artec TWAIN Source displays the part of the image that
has been scanned. If the image to be scanned is smaller than the Scan
Window, there is no question that the whole image will be displayed.
However, if the image is larger than the Scan Window, then how the
scanned part of the image will be displayed becomes a problem. To solve
this problem, Artec TWAIN Source provides three display modes: LOOP,
SCROLL, and DISABLE. The "LOOP" mode will cause the scanned image to be
divided into a series of blocks each in the size of the Scan Window
and displayed one after another. Each block replaces its previous one
starting from the top part of the Scan Window. If you choose the
"SCROLL" mode, the displayed image scrolls along inside the Scan Window
as you roll your scanner over the image. If "DISABLE" is chosen,
there won't be any display inside the Scan Window until the completion
of the scanning. Because displaying image in the Scan Window slows down
the scanner's scanning speed, you will get the maximal scanning speed
if the "DISABLE" mode is selected. On the Contrary, you will get the
minimal scanning speed if the "SCROLL" mode is selected. To select
the display mode, choose the Preview command in the Control Menu Box
of ViewScan Source window, then a drop down menu containing Loop,
Scroll, and Disable appears and select your desired mode.
The default display mode is LOOP.

6. If you are not satisfied with the result from AutoMerge in Artec TWAIN
Source, you can use Manual Merge as an alternative. To use Manual Merge,
you should scan the first strip from the TWAIN Source, and then select
"Merge From" command from the Edit menu. Selecting "Merge From" command
will display a drop-down menu with three options for you to assign the
second strip to be merged with first strip. The three options are:
   Clipboard, File, and Image Source.

7. Installing PhotoFina L.E. will create/add the following
   subdirectories/files onto your diskette.

   \PFINA directory

      SETUP.EXE
      SETUP.INF

8. More About Walkscan Driver, WALKSPI.SYS
--------------------------------------------

1) Supporting Bi-directional Parallel Port

The Walkscan driver supprts both Uni-directional and Bi-directional
parallel ports. At the completion of PhotoFina's installation, the following
command line will be added to the CONFIG.SYS file in your root directory:

DEVICE=C:\WALKSPI.SYS/MODE=4

The parameter /mode=4 indicates that your parallel port is assumed to be
Uni-directional. But you might have a Bi-directional parallel port which
supports a much faster scanning speed (about 150% faster). Therefore, after
scanning is checked to be alright, and the scanning speed is roughly measured,
the user is recommended to change the CONFIG.SYS file by deleting /mode=4 from
the command line DEVICE=C:\WALKSPI.SYS/MODE=4, save the CONFIG.SYS file and
reboot your system, the driver will automatically check your parallel port and
use its Uni- or Bi-directional feature accordingly.

2) Troubleshooting For Interference In Printing Operation

The execution of WALKSPI.SYS often disables the printer, this will cause
printing problem
to those software packages whose printer driver does not re-initialize the
printer when printing job is invoked.

Two methods are provided here to solve this problem:

1] If your Walkscan scanner won't be used for a long time, you can mask the
command line "DEVICE=C:\WALKSPI.SYS" in your CONFIG.SYS file by adding "REM" to
the front of this command line. The line should look like this:
" REM DEVICE=C:\WALKSPI.SYS "
When you reboot your system, DOS will neglect this line so that the WALKSPI.SYS
will not be loaded and executed. When you need to use the scanner again, just
remove the "REM" and reboot your system. Everything will be back to normal just
like you first installed the PhotoFina.

2) The second method is for the user who does scanning and printing
alternatively. First remove the parallel port adapter and go to the directory
where PhotoFina is installed. Execute PRNON.COM by typing PRNON (in DOS
environment) or double clicking the PRNON.COM command (in Windows environment).
This PRNON.COM command will re-initialize your printer.
You should execute this command whenever the previous operation is scanning.

3) Printing with an application software under DOS :

After scanning, if you run other application under DOS and want to print
something out through the printer. You have to run the PRNON.COM file under
\PFINA directory before executing the Print function.

9. Converting Grayscale Display Mode to Black & White Mode
(for 400 and 800 dpi scanner user)
Since the defsult display mode is set to Grayscale Mode, if you are going
to scan Black & White images, please refer to ViewScan Source User's Manual
for how to change the Display Mode to Black & White.
