What's New in Version 2.10

A number of features have been added to version 2 of 1dir+. Most are
documented within the new manual, while others were added after printing
the manual. Those new features not in the manual are described here.

_______________________________________________________
Quick Sort Feature

The Quick Sort feature has been added to allow sorting of the files in a
directory without modifying the personality. To activate, press <Ctrl S>
from a 1dir+ directory display. A choice of Name, Extension, Date, or Size
may be chosen by pressing the first letter of the sort choice.

EMS Memory Mode

We have added an EMS mode to 1dir+. It is available as an option under
Memory Usage in the Set Up module. It enables you to reduce the resident
core of the program to just under 7K.

Using EMS mode typically causes 1dir+ to reload from disk. This means that
you need a PATH in your AUTOEXEC.BAT to the directory that 1DIRPLUS.EXE is in -
e.g. C:\.
To optimize performance and speed, if you set up and use a RAM
disk, copy 1DIRPLUS.EXE up to the RAM disk in your AUTOEXEC file. Then
you have to make sure that you have a PATH command that refers to the
RAM disk - e.g. D:\ - before the directory on the hard disk where
1DIRPLUS.EXE is typically stored.

An example of a PATH command where the hard disk is C: and the RAM
disk is D:

    PATH D:\;C:\

Because DOS checks the drives and directories in the order that they are in
the PATH command, this command will check the RAM disk first. If you
don't do this, you won't gain any advantage in speed because, you will end
up reloading 1dir+ from disk anyway.

Printing extended characters with View or Print

Previous versions of View and Print did not allow printing of "extended"
characters, such as form feeds or imbedded Ctrl characters. Only regular
ASCII characters were printed. The capability has been added to print
extended characters in both View and Print.

View will print in the current display mode: ASCII, extended, or hexidecimal.
To print extended characters, press the <F2> key and select extended mode.
Then print as you normally would.

Print allows you to select ASCII, extended, or hexidecimal from the box that
displays when Print is chosen. Use your cursor keys to select the
appropriate options, and press <Enter> to begin printing.

Number of lines per page in View and Print

As the use of laser printers has increased, it became exceedingly important
to allow you to change the number of lines per page that are printed. Many
laser printers will not allow printing of the normal 66 lines per page. You
may now specify the number of lines to print per page, when printing with
View or Print.

In View, when print has been selected, an additional box will display
requesting the number of lines per page. The default value is 66 lines per
page. If you do not wish to change the number of lines printed, select your
other options, and press <Enter>. If you do wish to change the number of
lines, use your left or right cursor keys to highlight the number of lines,
and enter the number of lines per page for your printer or paper length.
You may continue to select other options using your cursor keys. Printing
will begin when you press <Enter>.

When using the Print command, use the up or down cursor keys to select
the number of lines, and enter the proper number for your paper or printer.
You may continue to select other options using your cursor keys. Printing
will begin when you press <Enter>.

New Menu Builder Features

Since releasing the manual, we have added a couple of features to the Menu
& Command Builder System. They include:

    #1
The ability to create new commands when creating or modifying menus has
been added. Typically, you have to use the Create Command option to
create new commands. Using the new feature, however, you can be in the
middle of building a menu, realize that you didn't create the command that
you want, and directly pop up the Create Command options, using <Ctrl
Enter>. From there you can select the command type, program the new
command and save it out. After the command is saved, you will be returned
to the Menu Builder template, ready to insert the new command in the menu
that you were working on.

    #2
The ability to change a command type has been added. Typically, in order
to change a command type (Application, Unload/Application, Menu Change,
Directory Change, Menu & Directory Change) from one to another, you
would have to first delete the old command and then program a new one,
using a different type.

This new feature enables you to use the Modify Command option and select
the desired command. When the command is loaded into the appropriate
template, with the cursor positioned on Name, you can press <Ctrl Enter> to
display the Command Type options. Select the new command type and press
<Enter>. This will load the existing command into the template
corresponding to the selected type.

AutoTree Command

The AutoTree command has been added to the release version of the
command and menu library. It is found in the Utility menu. You may also
wish to replace the regular Tree command with the AutoTree command in
the Main Menu, or place it in any menu of your choice.

The AutoTree command is very similar to the Tree command. The difference
lies in the ability of the AutoTree command to execute a specific batch file
within the selected directory, and then redisplay the Tree! The batch file
that the AutoTree command executes is named AUTO1DIR.BAT. If the
AUTO1DIR.BAT file does not exist in the selected directory, the AutoTree
command behaves exactly like the normal Tree command. If you wish to
change to a directory that contains an AUTO1DIR.BAT file without executing
it, use the normal Tree command, or the quick key <Ctrl T>, to change to
the directory.

This command can be used to create a system that allows you to select a
directory, run the appropriate command for that directory, and then
redisplay the Tree. In essence, this can give you a whole new "face", as
well as provide an easy way to run the correct command for whatever
directory you change to!

You may use View to create the AUTO1DIR.BAT file. See page 6.2 of the
manual for directions on creating a new file with View.

Copy + Command

The Copy + command has been added to the release version of the command
and menu library. It is found in the Utility menu. You may also wish to
replace the regular Copy command with the Copy + command in the File Mgt
Menu, or place it in any menu of your choice.

The Copy + command allows you to change to the destination directory (or
drive) of the copy process. Use it just like the normal copy command.
When the copy process has completed, a prompt will ask you to press
<Enter> to change to the destination, or <Esc> to abort the destination
change.

Bourbaki's Bulletin Board

With the introduction of 1dir+ and the 1dir+ Muscle system, there needs to
be a way to facilitate the exchange of ideas between users. For this
purpose, we have set up a remote bulletin board that we hope will be an
active forum for this exchange.

The bulletin board is operational between the hours of 6:00 PM and 8:00 AM
Mountain Standard Time. Presently, the system runs at 1200 baud, although
it will be up to 2400 shortly. During the day, the phone line is used for a
FAX machine.

The Bulletin Board phone number is (208) 342-5823.

When you log onto the Bourbaki Bulletin Board System, you will have access
to almost everything available. You will NOT have the proper privilege to
download the current versions of 1dir+ or Muscle until your registration
information has been validated. Your privileges will be updated, generally
within one day. Have your 1dir+ and Muscle serial numbers handy for your
first logon. After logon, proceed to the system information section for
information on the Bulletin Board system. Read or download the information
for future use. Then look around the database, download what you wish, ask
questions, and make comments. In short, the Bourbaki Bulletin Board is
designed to be of service to YOU.
Use it !!

Custom System Design/Programming Service

With the introduction of the 1dir+ Multi-User Security System and Muscle,
the sophistication of what can be done with 1dir+ rises to a new level.
With this in mind, we are considering and exploring the possibilities of
providing custom system design services. We are interested to know whether
this appeals to you, or would be of value.

Some of the ideas / vehicles we have discussed include:

-The Bulletin Board. The bulletin board provides the ability for you to
upload your menu file(s) for modification, and then download the customized
menu file(s) for use on your system.

-System support via remote telecommunications control programs that allow
control of your computer from another, all by modem. Real time custom
design can then be accomplished remotely.

-Mail or ship your menu file(s) and design specifications to Bourbaki for
modification.

If you are interested, give us a call or drop us a note.
