CorelXARA Version 1.5
=====================

17th October 1996

Installing CorelXARA
====================

Windows 95 and Windows NT 4: Click on the Start button on the taskbar, select Run...
and type x:\setup into the Open field (where 'x' should be replaced by the drive
letter of your CD ROM drive). Click OK.

Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.51: In Program manager, Choose Run... from the File menu.
Type x:\setup into the Command line field (where 'x' should be replaced by the drive
letter of your CD ROM drive), and press OK.

The setup program will guide you through the steps needed to install CorelXARA.

Minimum hardware requirements
=============================
CorelXARA requires a 486 or better, and at least 8MB of RAM.
We would recommend a large amount of virtual memory (20MB or better).
It runs on Windows 95, Windows 3.1, Workgroups 3.11, Windows NT 3.51 and Windows NT 4.
It does not run on Windows 3.0.

Installing the Netscape Navigator Plug-in
=========================================
(Windows 95 and NT only)
The installer program will look for a copy of Netscape Navigator on your machine, but with
some installations it will not find it. If you have a copy of Netscape Navigator, the
installer program should ask you to confirm its location. To force the installer to install
the plug-in to a location of your choice, choose Custom install when asked, and make sure
the Netscape Navigator item is ticked. The installer will ask you to find the folder
containing the netscape program. It is usually a folder called Program inside a Netscape
folder and will often (but not always) contain a folder called Plugins. Once you've
found the right directory, choose Next to continue.

Installing the Xara Screen Saver
================================
This CD also contains the Xara Screen Saver.

Windows 95 and Windows NT 4: Click on the Start button on the taskbar, select Run...
and type x:\SSAVER\setup into the Open field (where 'x' should be replaced by the drive
letter of your CD ROM drive). Click OK.

Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.51: In Program manager, Choose Run... from the File menu.
Type x:\SSAVER\setup into the Command line field (where 'x' should be replaced by the drive
letter of your CD ROM drive), and press OK.

Exporting large bitmaps
=======================
This version of CorelXARA can export bitmaps of up to 4096 pixels wide by 16384 high.
If this isn't big enough, you can increase the limit to 8 times that size, but we would
only advise you to do this if you have more than 16M of RAM.

Stop running CorelXARA.
Find the folder into which you installed CorelXARA.
Find the file called XARADRAW.DLL and rename it to be XDSMALL.DLL
Find the file called XDLARGE.DLL and rename it to be XARADRAW.DLL
Now when you run the program you will be able to export much larger bitmaps.

Dragging objects in the Selector Tool
=====================================
When dragging objects in the selector tool, the program used to autoscroll if the mouse
pointer moved outside the window. In version 1.5 the same action does an OLE Drag and
Drop. If you want to go back to the old behaviour, first exit CorelXARA. Then load the
file CORELXRA.INI (in your Windows directory) into a text editor. Find the section
marked [OLE Local Server] and change the line that reads OLEDragType=2 to read
OLEDragType=0

Distributing the Xara Plug-ins
==============================
If you would like to distribute the Xara plug-ins that enable you to view CorelXARA files
in Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3, look in the folder called
PLUGINS on the CD. This contains two directories whose contents can be copied to two
High-density floppy disks and used to install the plug-ins on other computers.

Installer problems
==================
On Windows 3.1 the installer will occasionally fail and report system error messages.
If this happens, you should simply run the installer again, and make sure you type in
the same User name and Company name as you typed before. The installer should run
properly.

Windows 3.1
===========
Before you can use the program or view the movies you have to install Video for Windows.
Run x:\VFW\DISK1\Setup.EXE (where x is your CD ROM drive letter). You do not need to do
this for Windows 95 or Windows NT.

Win32s
======
If you have not installed the latest version of Win32s (the add-on that allows 32 bit
programs to run on Windows 3.1) the installer will tell you, and will run the Win32s
installer. After this has finished, you will have to run the CorelXARA setup program
again.

If you have problems installing or running Win32s refer to the notes below.

WinPrint and WINSPOOL.DRV
=========================

If you have a printer driver by LaserMaster, delete it or comment it out because it
interferes with installing Win32s. Then restart the computer so that the changes you
made will take effect. After you successfully reinstall Win32s, reinstall the driver or
remove the comment characters. The driver interferes with installing Win32s because the
LaserMaster drivers create a WINSPOOL device . The extension is ignored when the
filename portion of a path matches a device name. When Setup tries to write to
WINSPOOL.DRV, it fails, because it attempts to write to WINSPOOL. In fact, any Win32
application that tries to link to WINSPOOL.DRV also fails; however, most Win32
applications that print under Win32s do not use the WINSPOOL application programming
interfaces (APIs) because they are not supported in Win32s. You can usually disable this
driver while installing Win32s and then reenable it afterwards. Delete the \WIN32S
directory, the \WIN32APP directory, W32SYS.DLL, W32S16.DLL, and WIN32S.EXE from your
hard drive before installing. Although it is possible to install Win32s on top of an old
installation of Win32s, it is better to remove the old files before installing the new
ones. Edit the WIN32S.INI file on your hard drive. Change the line(s) SETUP = 1 to read
SETUP = 0. Restart your computer and reinstall Win32s.

Growstub (Mouse driver problem)
===============================
As your Win32 application starts, there is a general protection fault caused by
GROWSTUB in POINTER.DLL. This problem is caused by a bug in GROWSTUB, which is part of
the Microsoft Mouse driver version 9.01.

Microsoft Mouse driver version 9.01b corrects this problem. Driver 9.01b is available
via part number: 135-099-309 "Convert Mouse 2.0(dual) 9.01". This driver does
not introduce new functionality, therefore, you need only upgrade if you have run into
this problem. You can also avoid the problem by removing POINTER.EXE from the load= line
in your WIN.INI file.

Installation Verification for WIN32S

The installation guide for Win32s that is included in the Win32 SDK recommends
running the FREECELL application to verify that the installation was successful. This
article discusses some of the errors that may occur when trying to run FREECELL on an
unsuccessful install.
The article also contains a list of corrective actions to help you reinstall Win32s.

Possible symptoms

One of the following may occur when running FREECELL if the installation is not
successful:

1. File Error: Cannot find OLECLI.DLL
2.  Win32s - Error: Improper installation. Win32s requires WIN32S.EXE and WIN32S16.DLL
     to run. Reinstall Win32s.
3. Win32s - Error: Improper installation. Windows requires w32s.386 in order to run.
     Reinstall Win32s.
4. Error: Cannot find file FREECELL.exe (or one of its components).
5. The display is corrupted as soon as you run FREECELL.

Possible solutions

If you are having video problems, check to see if you have an S3 video card. Certain S3
drivers do not work with Win32s. Either use the generic drivers shipped with Windows
or contact your video card manufacturer for an updated driver.

Make sure that the following line is in your SYSTEM.INI file
      device=*vmcpd

Make sure that paging is enabled. From the Control Panel, select the 386 Enhanced
icon, choose Virtual Memory, and choose Change. Verify that the drive type is not set
to none. The type can be set to either temporary or permanent.

Make sure that SHARE is enabled. Edit AUTOEXEC.BAT and add the following line if it is
not already there:
      C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE
NOTE: Using FREECELL Help will generate errors, including "Routine Not Found" or
"Help Topic Does Not Exist." The generation of these errors has nothing to do with
whether or not Win32s is installed correctly. FREECELL.HLP was meant to be used with
WINHLP32.EXE. FREECELL.HLP uses the advanced features of WINHLP32 for full-text
searching. WINHELP.EXE, which runs on Windows 3.1, does not support this. As a
result, each time FREECELL.HLP tries to bind the Find button to the full-text searching
APIs, it fails, and Windows Help displays the message box. You can still read most of
the information in the help file. You can use the Search button to do keyword searches.
