Unless you are using a VM strictly experimentally, you should back up its data just as you would a physical machine. You can use the same utilities on a VM as on a physical machine for backup and restore purposes.

When backing up a virtual machine you should back up the following components:

• the NVRAM file associated with the VM
• the configuration file associated with the VM
• each disk associated with the VM
• data backups for individual programs, as desired
