Carrying Disks between VMs

You can physically transport VMware application disks between virtual machines. The advantage of this is that you can carry the entire state of a VM and all its applications by simply carrying a removable drive. This allows you to demonstrate or resume work in any application anywhere.

The requirements for carrying a virtual disk are simple. Obviously, you must make sure that the target ("to") machine has installed the VMware application and can open the removable drive as a virtual disk on a VM. This procedure is described in more detail below:

To carry a virtual disk from one VM to another:
  1. On the "from" VM, end the VM session with the application(s) in the desired state. Power off as usual.
  2. If you are using an undoable disk you must be careful that you do not lose any work. If you wish to save changes from the last session, it is safest if you Commit the changes when you terminate session. If you choose to Keep the changes, then you must also copy the redo log as part of the next step.

  3. Copy the following files to a removable drive:
  4. If you are using an undoable disk and you did not commit the changes when you last powered off, and you do not bring the redo log, you will lose all changes if you power on the target VM.

  5. When you arrive at the "to" VM, copy the files to disk.
  6. Or you can use the files directly from the removable drive.

  7. Power on the VM as usual on the target machine.
