Shutting Down a VM (Power Off)

The shutdown procedure for a guest operating system and VM differs little from a conventional OS shutdown.

To shut down a VM normally:

  1. Save any work in your application, and close the application.
  2. Run the appropriate shut down procedure for the guest operating system.
  3. (This varies by operating system.)

  4. Free the cursor from the VM and press Power Off from the menu.
  5. You will see a window verifying that the guest operating system is in a state suitable for shut down. After you press Power Off, the VMware application window remains, with the logo screen displayed.

At this point you can use any of the VMware file or toolbar options, for example, to power on a different VM after switching to another VM configuration file, use the VM configuration editor to modify a configuration file, or create a new file using the VM configuration wizard.

  6. Choose File/Exit when you are ready to exit the VMware application.
