VMware for Linux requires only a generic X server to run and can run with either a local X server or a remote X server.
VMware for Linux takes advantage of the DGA protocol that is currently supported only by XFree86. VMware has developed an extension to the DGA protocol (DGA 1.1) that allows virtual machines to take advantage of hardware graphics acceleration. This extension is available on the VMware Web site and is expected to be available at www.xfree86.org.
For best performance, VMware strongly recommends that you use XFree86, and specifically the VMware version with DGA1.1 support. This means that you should separately install the VMware X server SVGA on your Linux host operating system, before you run a VM.
To install the VMware X server SVGA refer to the VMware Web site for instructions.
To conform to the naming conventions of XFree86-based servers, the VMware server is called XFCom_SVGA and XFCom_Mach64.
You should upgrade your X server before running a VM for the first time. You can install the VMware application and upgrade the X server in any order.
