1. Starting and Running PartitionMagic
--------------------------------------

NOTE: This section replaces pages 27-35 in the *User Guide*.

PartitionMagic is designed to run from the floppy drive. No installation to
the hard drive is required. To run PartitionMagic from the floppy drive:

Step 1: If you are using:

Windows 95 - Exit to MS-DOS mode by clicking Start, then Shut Down from
the Taskbar. In the "Shut Down Windows" menu select "Restart the
computer in MS-DOS mode" and then click Yes. Proceed to Step 2.

Windows - Exit to DOS by selecting Exit Windows from the Program Manager
File menu. Then select OK. Proceed to Step 2.

DOS - Proceed to Step 2.

Note: You may need to install a DOS mouse driver to use a mouse with
PartitionMagic. Consult your mouse documentation for instructions. You can
also navigate through PartitionMagic using only the keyboard. See pages 46-50
in the *User Guide* for instructions.

Step 2: Once at a DOS or MS-DOS prompt, insert the PartitionMagic Diskette
into the floppy drive, type A:\PQMAGIC and then press Enter.

Hint: PartitionMagic defaults to a 640x480 screen resolution. If you want to
specify a resolution of 800x600, start PartitionMagic by typing A:\PQMAGIC
/800

2. License Types
----------------

The Personal License is a machine-specific license that allows modifications
on one specific computer. See the *User Guide* for the license agreement.

The Pack Version of PartitionMagic is available for use on either 5, 10, 20,
50, 100, 250 or 500 computers.

The Enterprise Version is for organizations requiring remote configuration
capabilities at multiple sites. This version provides for remote execution
which runs unattended through use of a script file. The Enterprise License
allows simultaneous use and can upgrade hundreds of users quickly and saves
time and travel expense. For information on the Enterprise Version of
PartitionMagic, contact PowerQuest Corporate Sales at (801) 226-8977.

3. Warnings
-----------

- Don't forget to backup your hard drive before using PartitionMagic. While
PartitionMagic has been thoroughly tested and is quite safe, power failure,
operating system bugs, and hardware design bugs can put your data at risk. No
software program, including PartitionMagic, is perfect. Before using any
utility that makes such extensive changes to your hard drive, you should
backup your data.

- CD-ROM USERS: When you create a new partition, it will be assigned a drive
letter in sequential order. The CD-ROM drive letter will default to the last
available letter. This will require you to reinstall the programs that run
from CD-ROM so that they will recognize the new drive letter. To prevent the
drive letter from changing in the future, you may want to assign a higher
drive letter such as M: or N: to the CD-ROM for DOS or Windows 95. For more
information on how CD-ROM drives or any form of removable media are affected
when using PartitionMagic, see the Technical Support area on our home page at
http://www.powerquest.com.

- If you run PartitionMagic from DOS: Turn off 3rd party disk caches.
Deactivate or unload any TSR programs that access or modify the partitions
being changed. Exit multitasking software such as Windows 3.1 before starting
PartitionMagic. Do not run PartitionMagic from a compressed drive.

- Avoid creating Multiple Visible Primaries (MVPs) if you are using Windows
95. Because Windows 95 does not support MVPs, creating them can cause data
loss.

- Sometimes changes made by PartitionMagic confuse Windows NT, which then
assigns drive letters incorrectly. Use Disk Administrator to assign the drive
letters to the values you prefer. Windows NT may also fail to boot if the
boot partition's arc name changes. See Microsoft Knowledge Base articles
Q102873, Q103673 and Q102877 for more information.

- After using PartitionMagic, it is normal to get an error message when
starting Windows 3.1 stating that the swap file is corrupt. Windows 3.1 is
designed knowing that disk utilities may move the clusters of the swap file.
When a move is detected, the error message is given. To fix the swap file,
delete the swap file and create it again. Click on the 386 Enhanced icon in
Control Panel, then on the Virtual Memory button.

- PartitionMagic uses the same DOS extender as DOOM. If DOOM will not run on
your computer, chances are that PartitionMagic will not run either.

4. Ignore OS/2 EA Errors on FAT
-------------------------------

The Preferences menu in Release 2.03 contains a new menu item: "Ignore OS/2 EA
Errors on FAT." When on, a check mark next to the menu item indicates that
OS/2 EA errors on FAT partitions will be ignored. By default, the preference
is on. If you wish to make changes to a computer on which you currently use
OS/2, you should deselect this option. Preferences are not saved, so you must
deselect it each time you start PartitionMagic.

5. Drives >1024 Cylinders
-------------------------

- Under DOS, PartitionMagic cannot read cylinders that DOS cannot see. If
you have cylinders beyond 1023 that the DOS version of FDISK cannot see,
PartitionMagic won't see them either. If some solution is in place on your
computer allowing the entire drive to be accessible, PartitionMagic will have
no problems accessing the entire drive.

-If part of the drive is inaccessible to DOS and contains partitions or parts
of partitions, only the partitions totally accessible to PartitionMagic are
enabled for modifying, even though they may be displayed. If part of the
extended partition is inaccessible, no operations are permitted anywhere
within it. OS/2 users may use the OS/2 Version of PartitionMagic to access
the entire drive.

6. Use of Windows 95's MS-DOS Mode
----------------------------------

There are valid technical reasons for not having a native Windows 95
executable. Not withstanding the lack of a Windows 95 executable,
PartitionMagic is targeted at Windows 95 users and is completely compatible
with Windows 95 in every way. PartitionMagic is fully Long Filename (LFN)
aware. PartitionMagic queries for the presence of Windows 95/DOS 7
functionality and uses the extended functionality, if present. And we have
gone to tremendous pains so that even in Windows 95's MS-DOS Mode,
PartitionMagic presents the user with a Windows 95 graphical user interface.
