This is the file to use when you try out the text editor keys.

The function of basic cursor movement keys:

Right Arrow Move a character to the right

Left Arrow Move a character to the left

Up Arrow Move up one line

Down Arrow Move down one line

Home Move to the beginning of the line

End Move to the end of the line

Page Down Move down one window of text

Page Up Move up one window of text

You can try these now.

The Ctrl key accelerates the cursor movement. It is used with four of the basic keys.

Ctrl-Right Arrow Move one word to the right

Ctrl-Left Arrow Move one word to the left

Ctrl-Home Move to the beginning of the text

Ctrl-End Move to the end of the text

Now is a good time to practice these key combinations.

The Shift key is used to select text. Selected text can be deleted, replaced, copied, cut, and pasted. When the Shift key is pressed the cursor is "anchored" at it's current location. While the Shift key is pressed, the cursor movement keys or Ctrl key combinations will select text. Text from the "anchor point" to the end of the cursor movement will be selected.

Here is a table of Shift key combinations.

Shift-Right Arrow Selects one character at a time to the right

Shift-Left Arrow Selects one character at a time to the left

Shift-Up Arrow Selects one line at a time moving up

Shift-Down Arrow Selects one line at a time moving down

Shift-Ctrl-Right Arrow Selects to the end of the word

Shift-Ctrl-Left Arrow Selects to the beginning of the word

Shift-Ctrl-End Selects to the end of text

Shift-Ctrl-Home Selects to the beginning of the text

Ctrl-A Selects all text

To deselect text, press any cursor movement key.
