1. Important License Information
----------------------------------------------------------------
This copy of Norton 2000 may be used only under the terms of a
license from Symantec Corporation. The license is located on the
CD-ROM in the file N2000\32bit\disk1\License.txt.

Your organization may have purchased an amended license from
Symantec Corporation. Your compliance with the terms of your
agreement is appreciated.

----------------------------------------------------------------
2. Unformatted File Scanning
----------------------------------------------------------------
We do not recommend you scan all files on your system without
regard to the type of data they contain. It is not useful to
scan executable binary files with Norton 2000, just as it is not
useful to scan bitmap files or compressed audio files. If you do
an indiscriminate scan which includes these kinds of binary
files, some might be flagged as containing issues of severity 1,
2 or 3. All this means for binary files of unknown format is
that one or more date pattern matches exist within the file.
This does not indicate a Year 2000 issue with files of these
types.

The unformatted file scanner can identify files you want to
examine for Year 2000 issues, with formats that are unknown to
Norton 2000. These might include comma-separated text files,
which are often used to transfer data between different
computers or applications. Another example is proprietary data
files that store data in binary format with fixed size records.

For the unformatted file scanner, Severity 3 is the highest
severity using the default settings, and is defined as "having
10 or more 2-digit years." Unformatted binary files are scanned
as if they contain fixed-length records of 80 bytes each. To be
rated Severity 3, an unformatted binary file must have a 2-digit
year in at least 20% of these "records," and an unformatted text
file must have a 2-digit year in at least 20% of its lines. You
can customize all of these numeric limits.

----------------------------------------------------------------
3. What the Application Scanner Considers to be an Application
----------------------------------------------------------------
When scanning your PC for applications, Norton 2000 reports only
the main programs, not components such as ActiveX controls,
device drivers, plug-ins, and so on. It also deliberately
excludes most setup and uninstall executables. These programs
are generally Year 2000 compliant, and reporting them creates
unnecessary clutter.

----------------------------------------------------------------
4. Application Compliance Information
----------------------------------------------------------------
The information about the Year 2000 compliance of third party
software referenced herein is based on the representations of
the publishers of such software products. Symantec has not
independently tested these products for Year 2000 compliance and
disclaims any liability for the accuracy of the information
about third party software provided herein. For additional
information about year 2000 compliance of third party software,
we encourage you to contact the software manufacturer directly.

----------------------------------------------------------------
5. Color coding Requires Excel
----------------------------------------------------------------
To color code and annotate Excel spreadsheets, Norton 2000 uses
Excel itself. If you copy an Excel data file to a PC that does
not have Excel installed, Norton 2000 will not be able to color
code and annotate that file.

----------------------------------------------------------------
6. Scanning While Running Excel
----------------------------------------------------------------
Launching Excel (via the Lightning button or any other way)
during a data file scan might interfere with the scan.
Conversely, color coding Excel spreadsheets while also using
Excel might interfere with Excel's operation.

In general, Norton 2000 will not be able to scan files that are
open or in use.

----------------------------------------------------------------
7. Windows Short Date Format
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Norton 2000 System Date Test recommends you set your Windows
Short Date Format to use a 4-digit year. When you run this test,
a button brings up the control panel, making this easy to do.

However, there are rare circumstances in which you should defer
following this advice until after you make other corrections to
your software. Some software applications depend on finding the
year digits in certain positions in a formatted date. If you use
such a program, upgrade or replace it before changing the
format. Even in a generally compliant software package, a form
or custom-written procedure might have been carelessly designed
to be dependent on a specific date format. Check for this in
software you use, before changing the Windows Short Date Format.

Also note: Adding two digits to the Windows Short Date Format
might require you to increase the display size of some
application date fields, such as Excel spreadsheet columns or
Access date display formats.

----------------------------------------------------------------
8. HP Vectra XM 5/xxx Series 4 BIOS
----------------------------------------------------------------
We have tested our diskette-based test with as many different
kinds of PCs and BIOSes as we could. One HP Vectra XM 5/120
Series 4 PC passed the test, but our software was unable to
restore the original system date. The only way we found to
restore the date was to use the built-in Setup program,
accessible by pressing F2 during the boot-up.

This Vectra had a Phoenix BIOS version 4.05.7, and an HP version
GW.07.1. This BIOS is upgradable using software available on
HP's web site. Upgrading the BIOS of this machine corrected the
problem. It set the HP version to GW.07.12b.

If you have a similar model Vectra, with a BIOS version earlier
than GW.07.12b, visit the URL below to obtain an upgrade. If you
run the diskette-based BIOS test and do not correct the date
using the built-in Setup, your PC might reboot with its system
date set to 2098 or 2099. Many PC applications will fail to run
properly with this system date.

The BIOS upgrade for this HP Vectra XM Series 4 machine was
obtained from:

----------------------------------------------------------------
9. Color-coding Excel 4.0 files Using Localized Versions of
   Excel 97
----------------------------------------------------------------
Problems might occur when annotating certain Excel 4.0
worksheets using localized versions of Excel 97. If this occurs,
try saving the file in Excel 97 format and re-scan.

----------------------------------------------------------------
10. Symantec Trialware
----------------------------------------------------------------
The latest Norton AntiVirus Trial Edition and other trial
versions of Symantec software can be found at:

http://shop.symantec.com/trialware

----------------------------------------------------------------
11. Real-Time Clock Error Detection
----------------------------------------------------------------
Some PC RTCs roll over incorrectly, and this is corrected by the
system on the next reboot. After the rollover and before the
reboot, applications which obtain the date from the BIOS or OS
will be fine. Those rare or hypothetical apps which obtain the
date from the RTC directly will get incorrect data. The Norton
2000 BIOS test does not report this problem. However, The
Norton 2000 BIOS fix does correct it.

----------------------------------------------------------------
12. 8-bit ASCII Characters in ODBC
----------------------------------------------------------------
Some ODBC drivers convert 8-bit ASCII characters, preventing
the scanner from detecting the date format elements containing
these characters.

----------------------------------------------------------------
13. Norton 2000 Database Software Requirement
----------------------------------------------------------------
Norton 2000 Database requires Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 with
Service Pack 4, or SQL Server 7.0 installed on the server.

ODBC driver for SQL Server version 3.60 or later must be
installed on the client to insure proper operation. We have
provided this driver (MDAC_TYP.EXE) and DCOM support files on
the Norton 2000 CD, in the SUPPORT folder.

----------------------------------------------------------------
14. Norton System Center Installation
----------------------------------------------------------------
The NSC Install first installs Microsoft Management Console
(MMC). Because of the nested installs, the InstallShield wizard
will prompt you for permission to reboot. This loops until you
cancel. When this happens, reboot your computer manually and the
install will be complete.

----------------------------------------------------------------
15. Some new Dell PCs Lock Up when Running the Norton 2000
    System Date Test
----------------------------------------------------------------
It appears that the Dell PCs in question are Year 2000
compliant, by our standards and those of NSTL. However, some
tests check the RTC rollover independent of the BIOS, and claim
there is an issue for nonstandard software, which reads the RTC
directly. We have never found any such software, so we don't
think this is an issue.

Dell released the Y2000RTC driver to reassure customers running
these tests. This driver updates the RTC when the BIOS rolls
over. You should use version A01, as the initial release,
version A00, caused a system freeze when our System Date Test
ran. Even though we don't think the Y2000RTC driver is
necessary, if you choose to run it, you should use the latest
version.

Incidently, running Norton 2000's BIOSFix driver would work just
as well for this purpose.

For more information, see:
http://www.dell.com/year2000/tech/notes.htm (indicates error)
http://www.dell.com/year2000/index.htm (has updated fix)

----------------------------------------------------------------
16. Reported CPU type and speed are approximations
----------------------------------------------------------------
The CPU type and speed shown in the System Information dialog
box, and stored in the Norton 2000 Database, are approximations.
They can distinguish a 486 from a Pentium, but might not
correctly identify an AMD or Cyrix CPU.

----------------------------------------------------------------
17. Fix Assistant limitations
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Excel language version you have installed, the language you
specify when you install Norton 2000, and each Excel file's
internal language code all have to match in order for you to
use Fix Assistant for Excel to modify the file.

You must be in Data File Scan view to enable Fix Assistant, and
MS Excel must be installed.

We recommend that you turn off sheet and file protection before
attempting to fix files with the Fix Assistant.

We recommend not trying to repair a file with Fix Assistant that
is open in Excel.

----------------------------------------------------------------
18. Launching an URL from the lightning bolt button
----------------------------------------------------------------
On Windows 95, if Microsoft Internet Explorer has never been
installed, Norton 2000 might not be able to launch an URL via
the lightning bolt button. The workaround is to browse to the
URL displayed in your Internet browser.

----------------------------------------------------------------
19. Unicode not supported for Import into Norton 2000 Database
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Norton 2000 Database imports data from .log files and .exp
files created by the Norton 2000 Agent. If you read these files
in Notepad and save them as Unicode, Norton 2000 Database will
be unable to import them.

----------------------------------------------------------------
20. Important Note for Beta Testers of Norton 2000 Database 1.3
----------------------------------------------------------------
If you are using Norton 2000 Database version 1.3, you can
install version 2 according to the instructions in the
Implementation Guide, with one exception. Executing the
InstallDatabase.sql script will remove all of the data in your
database.

Instead, execute the RefreshViews.sql script to update your
database to version 2.0.

----------------------------------------------------------------
21. Sample files on the Norton 2000 CD
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Norton 2000 CD has a folder named "Samples," which contains
files illustrating the kinds of Year 2000 issues that can arise
in data files created by commonly used applications.

You can use Norton 2000 to scan these files directly from the
CD to see the issues reported. However, if you wish to test
Norton 2000's annotation, color-coding, or Fix Assistant
features on these files, you must copy them first to your hard
drive, and work on the copies. You cannot write to the files on
the CD-ROM.

----------------------------------------------------------------
22. Tivoli IT Director
----------------------------------------------------------------
Tivoli IT Director Server has a file named director.mdb. The
Norton 2000 data scan reports this file, because it allows input
of 2-digit years. IT Director does not use 2-digit years, and is
fully Year 2000 compliant.

----------------------------------------------------------------
23. Windows NT Service Packs
----------------------------------------------------------------
Norton 2000 requires the following Windows NT Service Packs:

For Windows NT v3.51 - Service Pack 5
For Windows NT v4.0 - Service Pack 3 or above

----------------------------------------------------------------
24. Windows NT v3.51 installation issue
----------------------------------------------------------------
On Windows NT v3.51, at the end of the Norton 2000 Corporate
Edition install, you may encounter a crash in WINT351.EXE.
WINT351.EXE installs some Internet connectivity libraries
required by LiveUpdate. If you encounter this problem, restart
the machine and run WINT351.EXE from your Norton 2000 Corporate
Edition installation directory, which by default is
C:\WIN32APP\N2000CE.

----------------------------------------------------------------
